The Persian fallow deer’s natural habitat is the dense forests of the Zagros region and areas in southwestern Iranian province of Khuzestan. The unique animal species has been living across the Mesopotamia region for centuries. It was thought to be extinct in Iran until 1951 when the animal was seen in Dez and Karkheh National Parks in Khuzestan.

The Persian fallow deer is larger is size compared to Shoka and smaller than Meral with a main difference being the white spots that exists on the back and sides of the animal’s body. The male deer develops long horns when it is only one year old.
A major regeneration program was launched in Iran after the animal was spotted in the country, leading to a significant increase in its population.
